MUSEUM EDUCATION

Lara studied Fine Art at Oxford University and completed her MA in Art History at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London where she focused on postcards as artistic medium. Until recently, she worked for the education department of the Austrian National Gallery Belvedere and, since joining in July 2018, currently works in the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien.

In addition to earlier experience in museum education in the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Biennale di Venezia, Lara’s recent work in museum education has revolved around the following temporary exhibitions:

KUNSTHISTORISCHES MUSEUM WIEN 2018 Die Eremitage zu Gast; Bruegel; Spitzmaus Mummy in a Coffin and Other Treasures 2019 Mark Rothko; Caravaggio & Bernini

ÖSTERREICHISCHE GALERIE BELVEDERE 2018 Egon Schiele: Wege einer Sammlung 2019 Die Stadt der Frauen // City of Women

As practicing artist, her research interests orbit around notions of memory and preservation as well as surface materiality of sites and objects. Fusing education and, upon request, multilingual performance, Lara’s tours explore a variety of themes. Here’s an overview:

  • Old Masters of Conceptual Art: concetto is eternal

  • Mirror mirror off the wall: Venice and the reflective surface

  • From bäuerlich und bürgerlich to königlich und kaiserlich: 360° of hierarchy in the Habsburg picture gallery

  • Of silk and gem from head to toe: peeking into the wardrobes of kings and queens

  • The Kunsthistorisches Museum during WWII and cases of restitution

  • Gustav Klimt in the Kunsthistorisches Museum

  • A Playground for Emperors: Treasures of the Kunstkammer and notes on Rudolf II in Prague

  • Painters, Poets and Cartographers: artists’ friendships and explorations of interdisciplinary approaches to art-making

  • Standing on the shoulders of giants: artists learning, teaching and collaborating

  • How to shape a painting? Exploring frames and outlines from Veronese to Cranach

  • Hidden clues: artistic tendencies to help decipher authorship

  • Cities of Trade: precious goods in Venice and Antwerp

  • Draw a Line and learn to Read a Painting: exploring layout and narration

  • Pieter Bruegel the Elder subject to climatic hazards

  • Manifesting luxury: from tulips to jewels

  • Considering saturation before digital technology: grisaille painting versus radiant pigments

Lara’s working languages are German, English and Italian. Czech may be offered given early notice. Should experimental approaches to museum tours be of interest, Lara also offers multilingual tours and, for the brave, fragments from period verse and proverbial wisdom in the original languages. This includes old Dutch.

Tours can be adjusted depending on the age of attendees. Tours for children can, upon request, involve hands-on material and drawing activities inside the exhibition space. For schools, some tour themes are offered with an additional creative programme taking place in the museum’s workshop space. Lara recently co-authored an active creative programme on the expression of gesture in Rome around 1600.

For tours in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, bookings have to be made via the museum’s education department. Should you wish to book a general tour of the museum’s picture gallery or a themed tour with Lara, please follow https://www.khm.at/en/learn/kunstvermittlung/private-tours/
